RICHMOND, Va. — Richmond Ivy (4-2-0, 12 pts) defeated the Charlottesville Blues (0-5-0), 1-0, in the second leg of the 64 Derby. Madie Vincent scored the lone goal for the Ivy in the 39th minute and allowed the Richmond side to claim a sweep across the 64 Derby for the 2024 season.
The Ivy first saw the Blues on Thursday, May 23, at City Stadium where they beat Charlottesville, 5-0, behind a brace from Kanna Matsuhisa and goals from Vincent, Kiley Fitzgerald and Taylor Berry.
Though a much closer scoreline, the Ivy controlled much of today’s play. In the seventh minute of the match, Berry sent a shot on net from just outside the top left of Charlottesville’s penalty area. It almost snuck inside the near post but the keeper saved it in time.
In the 17th minute, Pustover sent a ball through to Berry who forced a corner but the Ivy couldn’t convert.
Kendyl Sarver found her first shot on goal in the 32nd and Morgan Oliver found hers in the 35th to force a save and a corner. The Ivy would keep knocking through the 39th minute when Vincent found herself on the ball.
Kanna Matsuhisa sent a ball to the top of the box for Berry but a Blues defender stepped in the way of the pass. Vincent stepped to the rebound and reclaimed the ball to take a strike that snuck in the bottom left corner of the net to open the scoring and put the Ivy up 1-0.
At the close of the half, the Blues came down and forced a corner but Lauren Hargrove made a beautiful save on the attempt to keep the Blues out.
Opening the second half, the Ivy were relentless. Three corner attempts in a row forced saves from the keeper but none fell through to the back of the net.
In the 70th minute, Kanna Matsuhisa climbed up the left side and sent a crossing ball into Berry who took a one touch shot that slipped just over the crossbar.
The Ivy stay on the road as they head to Lancaster Inferno on Friday, June 7. They will then return to the City Stadium pitch on Thursday, June 13 to host Patuxent FA. The team will host Women’s Empowerment Night presented by First Tee and a “dress up like your idol” contest.
