Former Kickers Pro player, VCU player and coach, Sekyere will lead the Ivy for 2025.
RICHMOND, Va. (Tuesday, March 4, 2025) — The Richmond Ivy are proud to announce the appointment of Fred Owusu Sekyere as head coach for their second season. With an impressive background both playing and coaching, Sekyere is set to bring a wealth of experience, leadership, and passion to the team.
“I am excited to be named as the Head Coach for the Richmond Ivy for the 2025 season,” Sekyere said. “I look forward to working with Madeline and the rest of the staff to create the best possible experience for our players and dedicated fans throughout the season. I would like to thank both Rob and Madeline for this opportunity. It is an honor to join the Richmond Ivy family and I can’t wait to get started.”

Sekyere has been a consistent coaching presence in the Richmond region. He served as a volunteer assistant coach at VCU — his alma mater — from 2021-2022 before he went to George Mason as an assistant for the 2023 season. In 2024, he returned to VCU as a full-time assistant before taking over as their interim head coach for the rest of the season.
In his first stint with the Rams, VCU won the program’s first Atlantic 10 regular season championship in Sekyere’s first season on staff and tied a school record with nine straight wins and a 13-4-0 record. In his second season, VCU earned a spot in the Atlantic 10 Tournament with an 8-3-8 record.
Sekyere has served the community as a youth coach throughout that time too. Sekyere served as the Director of Technical Development and Camps for the Richmond Kickers Youth from 2020 to 2023, focusing on enhancing players’ technical skills and overseeing camp programs. Since then, he has worked with Richmond United.
“We are excited to have Owusu leading the Ivy women this summer,” Richmond Ivy Chairman and CEO Rob Ukrop said. “Owusu has deep roots in the RVA community, impacting many kids and families from his previous stints with the pro team and as a local youth coach. His personal touch and connection with players will help our squad find their full potential this season.”
Before coaching, Sekyere played collegiate and professional soccer, serving first as a standout midfielder at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) from 2006 to 2009. He made 63 appearances, scoring 12 goals, and providing 15 assists.
After college, he played for NPSL club RVA FC in 2013. In 2014, he signed with the Charlotte Eagles of the USL Pro, making 28 appearances. He then joined the Richmond Kickers in 2015, where he played until 2018, amassing 96 appearances and four goals.
“We’re extremely excited to welcome Owusu as the head coach to the Richmond Ivy!” Sporting Director Madeline McCracken said. “Owusu brings a wealth of soccer knowledge to the team from his years as a professional soccer player with the Richmond Kickers and also as a college and youth soccer coach. He is passionate about player development and will help to continue to provide a wonderful experience and platform for our women to grow in their soccer journeys. We can’t wait for the community to support him and the rest of our team this season!”
